Talk title: Why blue carbon cannot truly offset fossil fuel emissions

Sophia Johannessen is a geochemical oceanographer and Research Scientist at the Fisheries and Oceans Canada Institute of Ocean Sciences, located on the west coast of Canada. She holds adjunct appointments at the University of Manitoba and the University of Victoria. She received her doctoral degree in Oceanography from Dalhousie University in 2000. The main theme of her research is the effects of climate change and local human activities on the coastal ocean. Over the last 23 years she has studied the dynamics of carbon, oxygen, nitrogen and contaminants in coastal waters and sediment, using tools such as sediment cores, sediment traps and moored instruments. Recently, she has applied her expertise in sedimentary organic carbon to the question of blue carbon burial in seagrass meadows.
